WHAT WE INSTALL
From subway to natural stone
Wall tile
Shower walls, tub surrounds, accent walls, wainscoting. Subway, large-format, vertical stack, herringbone, stacked bond — laid out for the room, not the box on the website.
Floor tile
Bathroom floors, mudroom, entryway, and laundry. Porcelain, ceramic, natural stone, and decorative cement tile. Proper substrate prep and uncoupling membrane where the floor calls for it.
Patterns and mosaics
Chevron, herringbone, hexagon, fish scale, custom mosaic borders. Pattern layout drawn before tile cutting starts — no improvised seams at sightlines.
Specialty installations
Tile-clad showers with niches and benches, curbless walk-ins, heated floor underlayments, kitchen backsplashes, fireplace surrounds, and outdoor patio tile when conditions allow.
PRICING
How tile work is priced
Standard tile installation labor often falls in the $15–$25 per square foot range. Materials are separate. Shower waterproofing, substrate repair, layout complexity, mosaics, niches, large-format tile, and natural stone can change the final price.
Final tile pricing depends on tile selection, square footage, complexity of pattern, substrate condition, and waterproofing requirements. Every project receives a written estimate.
Labor
Square footage, pattern complexity, cuts around fixtures, and substrate condition drive labor hours. Simple subway runs faster than a chevron mosaic with custom borders.
Materials
Tile selection drives material cost most. Porcelain and ceramic run $3-12/sqft typical. Natural stone, large-format, and specialty patterns can run $15-40/sqft and up.
Specialty work
Waterproofing membrane, custom niches, curbless shower pans, heated floor systems, and decorative borders add scope. We line-item these in the written estimate.

TILE FAQ
Common tile questions
Why does waterproofing matter so much — isn’t tile waterproof?
Tile is decorative. The waterproofing membrane behind it is what keeps the wall intact. Standard drywall in a shower fails over time when water gets behind tile (and water does get behind tile). We install Schluter Kerdi or equivalent waterproofing membrane on every wet-area wall and shower pan. The membrane is the system; tile is the finish.
Can I tile over existing tile?
Sometimes, but it’s often the wrong move. Tile-over-tile increases wall thickness, complicates fixture install, and hides whatever’s failing underneath. If the existing waterproofing was inadequate or the substrate has soft spots, tile-over-tile means the problem is deferred, not solved. We typically recommend full demo to the substrate, assessment, fresh waterproofing, then new tile. The in-home estimate covers what’s actually needed.
Do we need permits for tile work?
Most tile-only projects don’t require permits — replacing tile finish doesn’t change the structure. Tile work that involves plumbing rough-in changes, electrical (heated floors), or framing changes generally does. We work with licensed plumbers and electricians who pull required permits and schedule inspections. Specific permit requirements vary by city (Portland, Lake Oswego, Beaverton each have their own building departments). We confirm permit needs during the in-home estimate.
Can I supply my own tile?
Yes. Many homeowners source tile from a Portland-area showroom or online supplier. We ask that all tile, trim pieces, and accent material arrive on-site before build start so layout planning can proceed. Order 10-15% over square footage to cover cuts, breakage, and future repair. We can also source tile for you through Portland-area suppliers — your estimate breaks out our cost vs. owner-supplied cost.
Do you do natural stone, or just porcelain and ceramic?
Yes. We install marble, travertine, slate, limestone, and other natural stone in both wet and dry applications. Natural stone requires sealing during install and periodic re-sealing depending on material and location. The estimate flags sealing requirements and ongoing maintenance.
